Version 1.2 - Bar chart mods, algo fix, snatches
What's New 🚨
Snatch velocity tracking
Metric now supports tracking for Snatch variations. Be sure to place your phone in a position that allows for the entire lift to fit in the frame.
Bug report button
Users now have a direct line to the Metric development team so they can report issues, share glitchy videos and request features.
Improvements ✨
- Compact bar charts on the home page. The Metric UI is now cleaner, with the bar chart getting far easier to access.
- Stability improvement to filter false repetitions. Thanks to your feedback we were able to find a bug causing false rep detections when phones were in certain positions. This should now be much more reliable.
Fixes 🐛
- Moved some pixels around to keep Metric looking slick and easy to use.
- Improved the login, sign-in and forgot password flow, including a bug fix for keychain access.
Version 1.1 - Context, zoom, custom plate size
What's New 🚨
Training context
Metric now provides simple training context information that helps you determine how well you are lifting. The difference between the current set and the last set you performed of the same exercise at the same weight is shown below each stat on the homepage.
Camera zoom capability
Users setting up in tight spaces rejoice! You can now pinch to zoom. If your phone features a wide angle lens you can now use that extra space too.
Custom plate sizes
Now it is possible to train with those odd sized plates floating around your gym. When entering the set exercise information add the diameter of the largest plate on the bar and Metric can deliver accurate data.
Improvements ✨
- Less invasive alerts in camera setup. Metric will still alert you when stabilisation issues are detected, but will be a bit calmer This makes it easier to play with the new Zoom feature and not feel you are being yelled at by a computer!
Fixes 🐛
- A bug that caused noisy reps for some users has been tracked and fixed.
- A laundry-list of housekeeping and pixel pushing was also achieved.
Version 1.0.1 - Ballistic lifts and intelligent rep detection
What's New 🚨
Major algorithm upgrade
Metric has thrown out the rulebook (again 😀) by using an all-new intelligent rep feature classifier that determines your actual rep start and end points. With this smart algorithm update your rep velocity and ROM data is more truthful and actionable than ever before, and Metric can now easily handle ballistic lifts.
Ballistic lifts added
Several new lifts have been added to the exercise list including: loaded jumps (trap bar and barbell), cleans, jerks, push-press, high-pulls and step-ups. This is made possible thanks to the new rep feature classifier algorithm.
Support for multi-athlete recording
Early access users of Metric for Teams can now quickly switch between athletes while using one device to record sets.
Support for deleting sets
For future planned capabilities we have now added the ability to delete a recorded set entirely. This can be handy if you are messing about showing someone how to use the app and don’t want their set saved in your training history (hint hint).
Improvements ✨
- Search field on the exercise selection screen. You can now quickly filter the list to find your lift.
- Fewer taps between sets. Metric previously had an extremely convenient workflow for adding a new set, but after hundreds of sets recorded we realised we could significantly reduce the taps required by condensing everything to a single screen prior to recording.
Fixes 🐛
- Accelerometer tweaks to reduce false set cut-offs. Metric was previously a little sensitive to the device being moved and would prematurely end sets. Dropping your deadlifts is now less likely to kill the set recording (thanks Bryce!)
- General bug squashing. As ever Metric has had a range of small bugs or crashes resolved.
Version 0.6.0 - Improved 3D tracking and correction
What's New 🚨
New exercises
Two new exercises added to the library - Step Ups and Floor Press.
Improvements ✨
- Overhauled the tracking algorithm. Metric is now able to record sets reliably from a wider range of phone positions, including placing the phone lower down relative to the barbell.
- X & Z axis correction. Metric now features X-axis and Z-axis correction so mean velocity is more accurate, and aligns with other velocity tracking technologies that also offer X-axis correction.
Fixes 🐛
- Touch ups and bug squashing. As usual stability has been tweaked, bugs and crashes should be less common as a result.
Version 0.5.4 - Set editing and rep removal
What's New 🚨
Editing set details and hiding reps
You can now change the exercise or weight after recording a set. Even better, Metric now allows you to exclude a rep from the results. Maybe you pulled the bar too hard on set-up? No problem, press the icon next the detected rep to remove it.
Improvements ✨
- Variance is now consistency. Previously Metric reported how varied your range of motion was each set. Now Metric displays how consistent - the inverse number. Basically you should aim for 100% consistency!
- Optimisations for older phones. Users with older devices (especially on iOS 14), were sometimes getting some funky results. Metric is now better optimised for these devices and should be more reliable for these users.
- Memory handling restructure. When video was being reprocessed for accuracy, sometimes results would be wildly inaccurate. The culprit was memory handling; Metric now handles memory properly so more accurate results are in fact more accurate.
Fixes 🐛
- Tiny pop-up is no longer. A micro-sized information box in the app would randomly show up after a set and force users to re-start. We hunted down a tiny error that caused the tiny pop up and it should no longer be a problem.
- Touch ups and bug squashing. As usual stability has been tweaked, bugs and crashes should be less common as a result.
Version 0.5.0 - Video Overlay and Rest Timer
What's New 🚨
Video data overlay and easy sharing Metric now has a visualisation of your data placed on your lift video. This can help you understand how each rep looks and relate it back to your velocity. With the addition of a share button its now even easier to post your lifts to social, or quickly send them to your coach.
Rest timer Keep honest about your rest times with a new timer on the menu bar. It starts counting as soon as your last rep ends so you don’t have to do a thing!
Video re-processing Some older devices could struggle to keep up with the Metric computer vision algorithm during live recording. Now Metric will automatically detect if your device dropped frames and quickly re-process videos to confirm everything is accurate!
Fixes 🐛
- Weight field now allows comma’s to denote decimal place. Metric was not recognising European keyboard entry on the weight field. Region localisation is now turned on so Metric can be used no matter where you are!
- Missing video thumbnails have been found. Metric would sometimes show an ugly placeholder where the video thumbnail should be. Now it will always show you getting ready to max out!
- Kicking you out of the highlights screen shouldn’t be a thing. Metric was shooting people back from the screen with the bar charts before they could actually look at them. We couldn’t actually replicate this issue but Metric has been changed so that this is less likely to happen… (Let us know if you spot this bug?!)
Version 0.4.1 - App Store Launch
What's New 🚨
Metric VBT now publicly available on the App Store for iOS
We are thrilled to be able to launch the first public version of Metric VBT. Metric allows users to record a set of a barbell lift and immediately receive accurate velocity and range of motion analysis.
User training data in the cloud
For now there is little change to the user experience compared to the last beta, but Metric now connects to a cloud storage database which will allow future performance tracking features to be built!
Improved ✨
- Added 0% velocity loss support card. Sometimes Metric reports 0% velocity loss across a set, and that can be confusing! So now there is a support card explaining why this happens.
- Changed highlight information for single rep sets. Similarly you can’t have fatigue or variance on singles, so the highlights cards now show no value for these.
Fixes 🐛
- Tapability of cards. Some of Metric’s cards which looked tapable would not respond to taps if you didn’t tap the text or icon. Now the entire card can be tapped and Metric will respond as you expect (by opening the card!)
Version 0.4.0 - Public Beta
What's New 🚨
Account creation
Metric now requires users to create an account. In the future your user profile will allow Metric to track your velocity data over time and much more!
Error messages and information
Metic will now report when your data may be inaccurate due to errors in phone positioning. Messages point users to a guide for these common errors, helping you quickly make adjustments to your set up.
Improved ✨
- Shortened introduction flow. We removed instructions about keeping the phone stationary from the onboarding because Metric now actually checks that your phone is stationary before recording, and warns you if it isn’t.
Fixes 🐛
- Various text and UI colour changes. Do you ever notice spelling mistakes after hitting send on an email? App interface design is like that, and since launching the new UI we have spotted a lot of little things and got to work fixing them.
- Various crash fixes. Metric was crashing and having issues with some phones on iOS14, and was being limited to 30FPS on some front facing cameras. Metric should now no longer have these issues.
Version 0.3.0 - Public Beta
What's New 🚨
New user interface design
Metric has been completely re-designed thanks to the feedback of our early testers. This new user interface features:
- A persistent bottom menu lets you can start a new set with fewer taps
- Refined Set Review screen following Apple design conventions
- Highlighted stats which can be expanded
- Graph and table design refinements for better clarity
- The ability to review your set video from all the major screens
- Consistent dark/light mode colour scheme
Improved ✨
- Set data retained until a new set is recorded. Metric now holds onto your set data right up until you actually record your next set. Leaving the Set Review screen will not delete this data.
- Unit type permanence. Previously if you selected pounds for your weights Metric would sometimes be stubborn and convert everything to... well, metric! Metric now accepts that metric is not the only metric.
- Velocity trace auto-trim. The velocity trace now automatically trims to the first and last rep of a set, giving you a more focused view of how the set went minus all the pre-set fluffing around.
- Ongoing improvement to algorithm precision. Metric more accurately tracks velocity and range of motion data than ever before.
- Tweaked the acceleration triggers. You probably won’t notice but Metric is just a little faster at starting a set now!
Fixes 🐛
- Removed Trap Bar Jumps and Squat Jumps. This is a temporary measure as Metric was throwing errant results for these explosive lifts. A future release will bring these back when Metric can confidently handle explosive lifts!
- Various crash fixes. The endless hunt for the source of crashes on certain devices continues. Metric is now more efficient than ever, meaning many commonly reported crashes should be resolved.
- Video rotation fix. Sometimes Metric would warp and stretch your video in unexpected ways. Now Metric should present videos as expected.
- Camera preview dropout fix. Some users experienced a camera preview dropout while recording multiple sets in a row. We believe we found the culprit for this behaviour, and Metric should now correctly show you what Metric is seeing when recording.
Version 0.2.1 - Public Beta
Improved ✨
- Enhancement to the velocity detection algorithm.
The increase in fidelity with version 0.2.0 exposed a skew in Metric’s measurement of fast movements where bar speed exceeded ~0.8m/s mean velocity. This update removes this skew at faster velocity, further improving Metric’s validity and correlation to MOCAP reference data. Users may see notable change to their reported velocity for fast reps.
Fixes 🐛
- Fixed a selection of annoying crashes.
Metric pushes some older devices to the limit, often asking too much (of their memory and graphic processing). Metric is now less demanding, so older devices should no longer throw in the towel during sets!
Version 6.7 - Template Sharing & Smarter Warnings
What's new 🚨
Template Sharing for Teams
Coaches can now share program templates directly to individual athletes or their entire roster from within the app. Open any template and use the new share option to push it instantly — no exporting, no emails, no manual recreation on the athlete's end. Your programming reaches your athletes in just a few taps, ensuring your templates are ready when they need them.
Set Warnings and Guidance
Plate preview guidance, and post-set warnings now display with clear priority levels, so the most important issues surface immediately after each set. The redesigned warning view organises alerts by severity, giving you all the critical information at a glance without having to parse through noise. You'll know exactly what needs attention and what can wait before your next rep.
Improvements ✨
- Cloud Bug Reporting— reports now upload directly from within Metric without opening your mail app. The redesigned report sheet makes it quicker to describe and submit an issue, even mid-session
- Plate Preview Detection. Plate guidance before recording now runs faster and more accurately, helping you frame the perfect set.
- iPad Template Builder. Navigation between the template builder and an active workout on iPad is now smoother and more reliable.
- iPad Exercise List. A new dedicated sidebar view makes browsing and selecting exercises faster and more natural on larger screens.
- Keyboard Handling. Improved keyboard behaviour across the app ensures text inputs appear and dismiss predictably, keeping your workflow uninterrupted.
Bug fixes 🐛
- Fixed nav stack issue on iPad when switching between the template builder and an active workout
- Fixed layout issues with the feedback sheet and plate size custom builder on iPad
Version 6.6 - Plate detection preview
What's new 🚨
Plate detection preview
Metric now shows you whether it can detect your plates before you start recording. Get real-time feedback on your setup so you can adjust your position, angle, or framing before your set — no more wasted reps from a bad camera angle.
Improvements ✨
- Faster data loading across the app. Smarter use of local caching means less waiting when navigating between screens. The history tab and performance charts in particular just got noticeably faster.
- Smoother active workout screen. The active workout view has been refined for a more fluid experience from start to finish.
- Improved tracking accuracy. Optimizations to the shared vision tracking system have made barbell detection more precise, resulting in more accurate velocity data.
- Less post set processing. Metric is now able to process more video frames in real-time at both 720p and 1080p resolutions, meaning less post-set processing delays for live recordings.
- More reliable real-time feedback delivery. The pathway between real-time tracking and your audible rep feedback has been optimized, reducing latency, missed reps and providing a big increase to accuracy during live recording.

Training data export
You can now export your training data into a formatted spreadsheet ready to open in Excel, Sheets or Numbers. There are two export formats with grouping by workouts or by exercises and coaches can choose to export data for a single athlete or their entire roster.
iPad layout & program builder
Metric now supports landscape, portrait and split screen layouts on iPad. We've added a dedicated program builder layout for the bigger screen with an exercise list sidebar, making it faster to create and edit program templates. Perfect for planning your next training phase or for coaches writing programs for their athletes.
Easier metric switching
You can now switch focused metrics within the active workout by tapping on the metric heading row in the sets list. The same switching feature is available in the rep-by-rep table on the Set Review page. In the workout view you can now also include your set Trend % score to see all your workout trends in the one place.

- HEVC video encoding. Videos now save in HEVC, cutting file sizes by roughly 50% with no loss in quality. Faster exports, less storage used.
- Image color encoding fixed. Video was appearing washed out on playback for some devices, Metric now properly matches your device color space for playback and export.
- Refreshed UI across the app. Form fields, dropdowns, and text inputs have been unified across profile, quick set, edit set, and bug report screens for a cleaner, more consistent look.
- Improved cloud syncing. Training data is now saved and written to cloud storage more efficiently.
Bug fixes 🐛
- Fixed crashes in the camera and set history screens
- Fixed an issue where some devices failed to activate the GPU for vision processing, falling back to slower CPU paths.
- Numerous tracking and camera performance fixes
Version 0.2.4-beta - Mali support and preview feedback
What's new 🚨
Plate detection preview
Before you hit record, Metric now shows you whether it can see your plates in the frame. This gives you real-time feedback on your setup so you can adjust your position, angle, or framing before you start your set.
Fallback tracking for Mali chipset devices
Devices outside the flagship Samsung and Pixel line ups use alternative Mali GPU chipsets, that was not playing nicely with the Metric vision tracking system. We have now added a dedicated tracking and video processing pipeline specifically for these devices. Users who were reporting zero reps, crashes and failed imports (particularly the Motorola owners), this should now be fixed and working. Processing is a little slower, but accuracy should be just as good.
Improvements ✨
- Accelerometer fallback for budget phones. Device stability detection now works on phones without high-precision sensors.
- Faster real-time processing. Another round of processing speed improvements during live recording (up to 50+ fps for real time frame tracking on a Pixel 7 as baseline).
- Better bug reporting. More diagnostic logging and error catches in the vision pipeline, so when something does go wrong, we can find it faster.
Bug fixes 🐛
- Fixed camera zoom level not initializing correctly between sessions
- Fixed a preview distortion issue on some devices
- Fixed crash causes, hangs and sluggish processing steps throughout the vision and plate tracking system
- Fixed a bug in the dropped frames fill logic for post processing
Version 0.2.0-beta - Stability fixes
What's new 🚨
No new features in this release — this update is focused entirely on stability and performance.
Improvements ✨
- Faster post-recording processing. Set data processes faster after you finish recording, getting you to your results sooner.
- Improved selfie cam tracking. Barbell detection on the front-facing camera is now more accurate and consistent.
Bug fixes 🐛
- Fixed numerous crashes during video import and processing
- Fixed a bug where users with a large set history couldn't open the app
- Fixed a crash in the velocity trace chart when reviewing longer video sets
- Fixed selfie cam data and bar path being inverted
- Fixed Google sign-up failing for some users
Version 0.1.0 - Processing speed ups, personal records and trend charts
What's new 🚨
Personal record badges
Every set now shows animated record badges for load, mean power, reps, and mean velocity — each displayed as a percentage of your all-time best. Tap any badge for a detail sheet with context on where you stand: new record, closing in, or building your baseline.
Velocity trends
A new trend card compares your current set velocity against your six-week historical average. See at a glance whether you're trending up (well recovered and ready to push, trending down (potentially fatigued or not lifting with intent), or holding steady, and tap through for a detailed chart breakdown. Learn more about how Metric calculates Trends here →
Set quality warnings
After each recording, Metric now analyses your setup and flags potential issues — viewing angle, framing, plate size, 0 rep reps, and device stability. These replace the old generic "no reps" message with specific, actionable feedback so you can fix issues and get better data on your next set.
Device stability detection
Your phone now needs to be stable before recording can begin. An on-screen status pill shows whether your device is ready, needs to be held steady, or stood upright. Recording is disabled until the device is stationary and automatically stops if significant movement is detected mid-set.
Fullscreen video playback
Video playback can now be expanded to full screen with a tap. Includes a time scrubber, mute toggle, and your bar path and stats overlay — all carried over seamlessly between the mini player and expanded view.
Intuitive video playback
Video thumbnails are now extracted from the first rep in your set to provide better context and video playback now starts playing from 1 second your first rep starts, making technique review more efficient.
Improvements ✨
- Set history improvements. More details are now included on your set history list including a video thumbnail, your best rep velocity and % fatigue in the set.
- Faster real-time processing. Frame rates during live recording have jumped from 30fps into the high 40s and low 50s on devices that support 60fps, meaning smoother tracking and fewer missed data points.
- Smarter weight formatting. Decimal loads like 72.5kg now display correctly across the app.
Bug fixes 🐛
- Fixed set data failing to load on some sessions
- Fixed an issue where Real-time recordings were dropping video frames during processing
- Fixed an issue with video imports and crashes on some Android chipsets and devices
Version 0.0.2 - 4k import & bar path fixes
What's new 🚨
Set highlight bar
The set review screen now shows your best rep, set average, and fatigue/consistency metrics right at the top. Key performance data for every set, all at a glance.
Improvements ✨
- Midpoint zoom for ultrawide cameras. Wide ultrawide lenses (0.5x, 0.6x) now snap to a tighter midpoint zoom (0.75x, 0.8x), making it easier to frame your setup without switching cameras.
- Persistent selfie cam settings. Your camera selection and zoom level now carry over between sets, so you're not re-adjusting every time you hit record.
- Faster video imports. All imported videos process significantly faster, with 1080p processing speeds up to 2x quicker than before.
Bug fixes 🐛
- Fixed a crash when importing 4K video
- Fixed bar path inversion on selfie cam recordings
- Fixed video rotation detection on imported videos on some Android devices that was causing zero reps or only detecting walkouts (XY axis inversion)
- Fixed a spacing issue on the record action button
- Improved recording controls layout
- Disabled uploading 480p videos, which don't have enough resolution for accurate barbell tracking
